Keeping Your Food Safe During Power Outages

As Hurricane Florence makes landfall on the North Carolina coast, we are aware that many of our customers may lose power for several days. During this time it is important to remember to:

  • Open your refrigerator as little as possible. Keeping it closed will allow it to act as a cooler

  • Eggs should not be left at room temperature for an extended period of time before re-refrigeration.

  • Do not store eggs on ice.

  • Always cook your eggs thoroughly before consuming.

If you are unsure if your eggs are safe for consumption, use the float or sink test to determine if it is safe:

  1. Fill a cup up with cool, fresh water.

  2. Slowly drop the egg into the cup.

  3. Allow the egg 3 seconds to sink or float

  4. If the egg sinks to the bottom of the cup, it is safe for consumption. If it floats, it should be discarded. If the egg bounces gently, it is not fresh but is still safe for consumption.
