The second generation was now leading the growing company—Ronald attending to all things egg and Gene overseeing labor, trucking, and the feed mill. Ronald’s son, Scott, came on board in the mid-’70s and soon coordinated the purchase and buildout of Red Hill Egg Farm to meet the demands of our growing egg business. In the late ’70s, the company faced a difficult stretch due to a depressed egg market, and for a time couldn’t pay their contract growers. But all our growers stuck with us, and Ronald and Gene were able to repay them—plus bonuses—when the market recovered. With things looking bright again, Ronald took a leap of faith: to invest in the beginnings of the Eggland’s Best franchise.
